Hamber Foundation's Gifts to Dentistry and the Library

Professorship in Dental Geriatrics
Canada's first Professorship in Dental Geriatrics will foster research, teaching and learning made increasingly relevant by an aging population.

The Hamber Foundation made two generous gifts to UBC in 2006, in support of two different areas. A $250,000 donation to Canada’s first Professorship in Dental Geriatrics will help UBC’s Faculty of Dentistry lead the way in geriatric oral health. Once established, the professorship will foster research into new, effective practices and standards of clinical treatments, an increasingly important endeavour as more Canadians approach retirement age.

Meanwhile, the Foundation’s $125,000 gift will support UBC Library’s Rare Books and Special Collections (RBSC) division. The funds will be used to help catalogue thousands of maps, early BC pamphlets and other historic materials. “The impact of this cataloguing is to give the public access to over 16,000 items that were either not catalogued or had only brief records,” says Ralph Stanton, head of RBSC. Once catalogued, these materials can be digitized, making them available to people around the province and the world.
