Dr. Dimitrios Giannoulis passed away on March 23, 2008 at the young age of 38 after a valiant battle with cancer. Dimitrios was passionate about his career in the Department of Anesthesia at Vancouver General Hospital, and as Director of Anesthesia Undergraduate Training at UBC, where he had a significant impact on many medical students and their decision to pursue specialty training in anesthesia. He was well known for his humour, his passion for music, his love for his family, and for the dignity and compassion he shared with everyone he encountered.
In response to the overwhelming outpouring of emotion at his death, a group of his family, friends and colleagues joined together to establish a number of awards in his honour. These awards will support UBC Anesthesia Residents in Training and are a fitting tribute to Dimitrios’s memory.
The Dr. Dimitrios Giannoulis Memorial Prize in Regional Anesthesia is awarded to UBC Anesthesia Residents in Training who have demonstrated outstanding performance, innovation and compassionate care and have excelled in the study of regional anesthesia during their residency at UBC.
The Dr. Dimitrios Giannoulis Memorial Prize for Overseas Rotation Research Project in Anesthesia is awarded to UBC Anesthesia Residents in Training, in support of overseas travel to provide educational and clinical services or to complete a research project abroad.
