Enabling universal access to UBC Library’s vast collections demands a top‐notch technological platform. The highest demand for library materials and services takes place in the technological realm – for example, e‐books, e‐journals and other electronic resources can be accessed by the UBC community at any time. Last year, more than 6.3 million articles were viewed online, while the Library website received more than 5.6 million visitors.
In November 2010, a powerful new tool was launched at the Library, with the hope of making a significant impact on fledgling entrepreneurs around the province. The Small Business Accelerator, a free, web‐based resource aimed at small businesses and new entrepreneurs includes tips on conducting market research, forums to foster online sharing of information and support, and a range of research guides created by specialist business librarians and graduate students, with industry‐specific information on sectors ranging from alternative energy and Web development to landscaping and restaurants.
Generous contributions from our donors support technological advancements such as the Small Business Accelerator program, as well as the acquisition of software for downloading e‐books onto handheld devices, the purchase of digitization equipment and the expansion of online academic databases. Partnerships and financial contributions from our community ensure that UBC Library can grow and evolve to keep pace with – and anticipate the needs of information‐hungry 21st century learners and scholars.
