More than 25 millions seahorses, both dead and alive, are traded globally each year as souvenirs or for traditional Chinese medicine, and many are caught in nets as by-catch. Project Seahorse, in the Fisheries Centre, engages in seahorse research and conservation management practices ranging from community initiatives to international policy change. Based at UBC, Project Seahorse is active in locations in North America, UK, Europe, Southeast Asia, and Australia. Guylian, well known for its trademark seashell-shaped Belgian chocolates, partnered with Project Seahorse in 1999 and shares its vision for healthy, well-managed marine resources. Proceeds from each box of Guylian chocolates helps Project Seahorse continue its groundbreaking work.
