First Nations Legal Clinic serves clients in Downtown Eastside

The UBC First Nations Legal Clinic is a community program of the Faculty of Law that is supported by gifts from the Law Foundation of British Columbia. The Clinic has been located in Vancouver’s downtown eastside for over a decade, and gives upper-year law students the opportunity to provide a wide range of legal services to Aboriginal clients. Students are immersed in the legal community – they are temporarily articled by the Law Society of BC – for a full term of academic and clinical experience. In January 2009 the Clinic moved to a new facility just around the corner on Alexander St., where staff and students will continue their tradition of service to the community from a street level, accessible and independent renovated office.

“This is a demanding program, a little like a residency in that students have to complete academic requirements at the same time as providing direct service to clients. In the 13 years that we have been operating, almost every student has said it’s both challenging and very rewarding.” – Sarah Rauch, Director, First Nations Legal Clinic
