Complementary Medicine for Cancer Patients

School of Nursing

A $1 million gift from the Lotte & John Hecht Memorial Foundation has established the Complementary Medicine Education and Outcomes Program (CAMEO). This program will support people living with cancer who are considering complementary medicine. Since there is a knowledge gap around how to support cancer patients in making decisions about combining complementary medicine with conventional cancer treatments, the program will help researchers from UBC and the BC Cancer Agency develop new data that will strengthen the ability of health professionals to advise patients and their families.

A Partnership Towards Cancer Prevention and Cure

The Canadian Cancer Society, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, BC and Yukon, and the Government of British Columbia have partnered to contribute $4 million to establish the Canadian Cancer Society Chair in Primary Cancer Prevention at UBC’s Faculty of Medicine. One of only two in North America focusing on primary cancer prevention, this chair will generate new knowledge – such as increased understanding of the links between diet, exercise and environmental factors – develop and train new generations of population health researchers, and promote awareness of the importance of cancer-prevention behaviours, such as eating healthier foods and increasing physical activity. Since research has shown that fifty percent of all cancer cases are directly linked to modifiable risk factors, and can therefore be prevented, this chair represents a key step toward improving the health and lives of many.
