Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery

The Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery

The Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery is one of the province’s premier showcases for contemporary art and houses the University of British Columbia’s growing collection of contemporary art and artists’ archives. Through exhibitions, publications, lectures and symposia, the Gallery’s programs emphasize research, teaching, and scholarship in areas ranging from BC art history to international contemporary art, and contemporary approaches to the practice of art history, criticism and curating.

The Belkin Art Gallery’s programs serve a wide audience that includes the students and faculty of the campus community, as well as a local, national, and international public concerned with contemporary art.

Thanks to a generous gift from Mrs. Helen Belkin, the Gallery, which was formerly housed in the basement of the old Main Library, moved into its current purpose-built building in 1995. Designed by architect Peter Cardew, the Belkin Art Gallery has been described by critics as “…the most beautiful academic showcase of fine art in Canada”.

The Belkin Art Gallery’s exhibition, publication, and acquisition programs are funded entirely by government grants and private support such as donations from individuals and foundations.

Endowment Funds

The Belkin Art Gallery’s operating and programming endowment funds provide a stable and ongoing source of income in support of the Gallery exhibitions, public programs, publications, and operations.

Exhibition Sponsorship

Private gifts from individuals and foundations in support of specific projects allow the Gallery to produce major exhibitions of important Canadian and international artists, as well as publications that document and contribute to a critical dialogue in contemporary art.

Acquisitions

Gifts to the growing permanent collection and archives, including gifts in kind, play an important role in making these collections an important cultural resource for students, researchers, other institutions, and the public. Recent gifts and acquisitions include important works by Brian Jungen, Geoffrey Farmer, Edgar Heap of Birds, Gary-Lee Nova, Vincent Trasov, Michael Morris, Arabella Campbell, Steven Shearer, and Mark Soo.
