The Humanities 101 Community Program (Hum 101) in the UBC Faculty of Arts offers free university-level education to people living on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES) and surrounding areas who are passionate about learning and knowledge – regardless of their economic situation, academic history, or other financial and social barriers to further education.
Hum 101 offers:
- Three core courses on the UBC Point Grey campus: Hum 101, Writing 101 and Hum 201 (for alumni of both Hum 101 and Writing 101)
- Public Programs in the DTES and surrounding areas that are initiated and run by alumni and students
- Bus ticket transportation, meal vouchers, childcare funding as needed, school supplies, all reading materials, dictionaries, and UBC cards which give access to the UBC Library system and other university amenities
- Relevant, interdisciplinary approaches to critical and creative thinking across the Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences
- Ongoing engagement of its 400 alumni as volunteers and members of a governing Steering Committee
Often referred to as Canada’s poorest postal code, the DTES is a hive of community activism involving its widely diverse residents. The Humanities 101 program is committed to an ongoing responsiveness to its DTES community, active and meaningful synergies with the UBC community, and good practices for ensuring the continuation of both.
